4 large eggs

2 cups whole milk

1 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon butter (for greasing the dish)

Optional: whipped cream and nutmeg for serving

Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C).

    Prepare the Baking Dish: Grease a 1-quart baking dish with butter to prevent sticking.

      Mix the Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, ground nutmeg, and salt until well combined and frothy.

        Pour Mixture into Dish: Carefully pour the custard mixture into the prepared baking dish.

          Set Up for Baking: Place the baking dish inside a larger pan. Fill the larger pan with hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the custard dish. This water bath will help the custard bake evenly.

            Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for about 50-60 minutes, or until the custard is set and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.

              Cool and Serve: Once baked, remove the custard from the oven and the water bath. Allow it to cool at room temperature for at least 30 minutes. You can serve it warm or chilled. If desired, top with whipped cream and a sprinkle of nutmeg before serving.
