Ingredients

6 cups stale bread (such as French or challah), cubed

2 large apples (preferably Granny Smith), peeled, cored, and diced

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

½ teaspoon ground nutmeg

2 tablespoons brown sugar

3 large eggs

2 cups whole milk

1 cup heavy cream

½ cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

¼ teaspoon salt

½ cup raisins or chopped pecans (optional)

Butter, for greasing the baking dish

Whipped cream or vanilla ice cream, for serving (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with butter.

Prepare the Bread and Apples: In a large bowl, combine the cubed bread and diced apples. In a separate bowl, mix the cinnamon, nutmeg, and brown sugar, then sprinkle the mixture over the bread and apples. Toss gently to combine and set aside.

Make the Custard Mixture: In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until smooth and well combined.

Combine Ingredients: Pour the custard mixture over the bread and apple mixture, making sure to soak all the pieces of bread. If using, fold in raisins or pecans. Allow the mixture to sit for about 15 minutes so the bread absorbs the custard.

Transfer to Baking Dish: Pour the mixture carefully into the prepared baking dish, spreading it evenly.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.

Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and let it cool for at least 10 minutes. Serve warm with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream, if desired.
