Ingredients

4 cups all-purpose flour, plus extra for dusting

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup whole milk, warmed (about 110°F)

1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted (plus more for brushing)

2 large eggs

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

For the filling:

1/2 cup brown sugar, packed

2 tablespoons ground cinnamon

1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened

For the cream cheese frosting:

4 oz cream cheese, softened

1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 cup powdered sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1-2 tablespoons milk (as needed for consistency)

Instructions

Activate the yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm milk and sugar, then sprinkle the yeast on top. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

Prepare the dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Create a well in the middle, then add the melted butter, eggs, vanilla extract, and the yeast mixture. Stir until a dough begins to form.

Knead the dough: Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add a bit more flour as needed.

First rise: Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours until it doubles in size.

Make the filling: In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar and cinnamon. Set aside.

Roll out the dough: Once risen, punch down the dough and transfer it to a floured surface. Roll it out into a rectangle about 16x12 inches. Brush the softened butter over the dough and sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture evenly across the surface.

Form the rolls: Starting from one long edge, tightly roll the dough into a log. Cut the log into 12 equal pieces (about 1.5 inches each) and place them in a greased 9x13 inch baking dish.

Second rise: Cover the dish with plastic wrap or a damp towel and allow the rolls to rise again for another 30-45 minutes until puffy.

Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Bake the cinnamon rolls: Once the rolls have risen, bake them in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top.

Prepare the frosting: While the rolls are baking, beat together the cream cheese and butter until smooth and creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract, then mix in milk until you reach your desired frosting consistency.

Frost and serve: Once the rolls are baked, remove them from the oven and let them cool for 5-10 minutes. Drizzle the cream cheese frosting over the warm rolls and serve immediately.
