Ingredients

12 oz ziti pasta

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 medium onion, chopped

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 lb ground beef or Italian sausage

2 cups marinara sauce

1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

Salt and pepper to taste

2 cups ricotta cheese

1 egg

3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Fresh basil, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.

Cook the Pasta: In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Cook the ziti according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Prepare the Meat Sauce: In a large skillet over medium heat, heat the olive oil. Add the chopped onion and sauté until it becomes translucent, about 5 minutes. Add minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.

Add Meat: Stir in the ground beef or sausage, breaking it up with a spatula. Cook until browned and no longer pink, about 8-10 minutes. Drain any excess grease.

Combine with Marinara: Pour in the marinara sauce, Italian seasoning, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and pepper. Let the mixture simmer for about 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

Mix the Ricotta: In a medium bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, half of the mozzarella, and half of the Parmesan. Mix until smooth.

Layer the Ingredients: In the greased baking dish, spread a layer of the meat sauce on the bottom. Then, add half of the cooked ziti, followed by dollops of the ricotta mixture. Layer another portion of the meat sauce on top. Add the remaining ziti, followed by the rest of the meat sauce.

Top with Cheese: Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese over the top.

Bake: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.

Garnish and Serve: Once done, allow the baked ziti to cool for a few minutes. Garnish with fresh basil if desired, slice, and serve warm.
