Ingredients

1 pound ground beef (80/20 blend for flavor)

1/3 cup breadcrumbs (preferably fresh)

1/4 cup milk

1 large egg

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

Salt and pepper to taste

2 tablespoons vegetable oil (for cooking)

2 large onions, thinly sliced

2 cups beef broth

1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons cold water (optional, for thickening)

1 teaspoon fresh thyme or 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme

Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

Prepare the Meat Mixture:

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined; do not overwork the meat.

      Form the Patties:

Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each into a patty, about 1 inch thick. Make a small indent in the center of each patty to prevent puffing during cooking.

          Cook the Patties:

In a large skillet over medium heat, add the vegetable oil. Once hot, add the patties to the skillet. Cook for 4-5 minutes on each side, or until browned and cooked through. Remove from the skillet and set aside, keeping warm.

              Sauté the Onions:

In the same skillet, add the sliced onions. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are caramelized and golden brown, about 10-15 minutes. You may need to reduce the heat to medium-low to prevent burning.

                  Make the Gravy:

Once the onions are caramelized, add the beef broth and thyme to the skillet. Stir, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom. Bring to a gentle simmer and let it reduce slightly, about 5 minutes. If you prefer a thicker gravy, stir in the cornstarch slurry and cook until thickened.

                      Serve:

Place the hamburger steaks back in the skillet to coat with the gravy for a minute. Transfer the patties to plates, generously spoon the onion gravy over the top, and garnish with chopped parsley.
