Ingredients

14 oz (400g) firm tofu, pressed and drained

1/4 cup cornstarch

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

1/4 cup vegetable oil (for frying)

4 tablespoons unsalted butter

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 tablespoon soy sauce

1 tablespoon maple syrup (or honey)

1 teaspoon fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Sesame seeds (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

Prepare the Tofu: Start by cutting the pressed tofu into bite-sized cubes, about 1-inch thick. Place the cubes on a clean kitchen towel or paper towels to remove excess moisture. Let them sit for about 10-15 minutes.

Coat the Tofu: In a mixing bowl, combine the cornstarch, flour, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper. Toss the tofu cubes in the dry mixture until well coated. Let the coated tofu sit for another 10 minutes to help the coating adhere.

Fry the Tofu: Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, carefully add in the tofu cubes, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 3-4 minutes on each side or until golden brown and crispy. You may need to do this in batches. Remove the crispy tofu bites and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil.

Make the Garlic Butter Sauce: In the same skillet, lower the heat to medium. Add the butter and let it melt. Stir in the minced garlic and sauté for about 1-2 minutes until fragrant, being careful not to burn the garlic.

Combine Tofu with Sauce: Pour in the soy sauce and maple syrup, mixing well. Add the crispy tofu bites to the skillet and gently toss them in the garlic butter sauce until they are evenly coated.

Serve: Transfer the garlic butter tofu bites to a serving platter. Garnish with chopped parsley and sesame seeds if desired. Serve hot as an appetizer or alongside rice or noodles for a delicious meal.
