Ingredients

9-12 lasagna noodles

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 pound ground beef (or Italian sausage)

1 medium onion, chopped

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes

2 tablespoons tomato paste

1 teaspoon dried basil

1 teaspoon dried oregano

Salt and pepper to taste

15 oz ricotta cheese

1 egg

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Cook the Noodles: In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook the lasagna noodles according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Prepare the Meat Sauce: In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion and sauté for 2-3 minutes until translucent. Add minced garlic and cook for an additional minute. Then, add ground beef (or sausage) and cook until browned. Drain excess fat if needed.

Add Tomatoes and Spices: To the skillet, stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, dried basil, dried oregano, salt, and pepper. Simmer on low heat for about 15 minutes, allowing flavors to meld and sauce to thicken.

Mix the Ricotta Cheese: In a bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, a pinch of salt, and a dash of pepper. Mix until smooth and well-combined.

Assemble the Lasagna: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). In a 9x13 inch baking dish, spread a thin layer of the meat sauce on the bottom. Place a single layer of noodles over the sauce. Spread half of the ricotta mixture over the noodles, followed by a layer of mozzarella cheese. Repeat the layers with more meat sauce, noodles, ricotta, and mozzarella until all ingredients are used, finishing with a layer of sauce topped with the remaining mozzarella and all of the Parmesan cheese.

Bake: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil (to prevent sticking, spray foil with cooking spray). Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Then, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.

Cool and Serve: Allow the lasagna to cool for about 10-15 minutes before slicing. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired. Serve with a side salad or garlic bread for a complete meal.
