Ingredients

9 lasagna noodles

1 pound ground beef

1 pound Italian sausage

1 onion, chopped

3 cloves garlic, minced

2 (15 oz) cans of tomato sauce

2 (6 oz) cans of tomato paste

2 (14.5 oz) cans of diced tomatoes

2 tablespoons sugar

1 tablespoon dried basil

1 tablespoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon black pepper

2 cups ricotta cheese

1 egg

3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Cook the Noodles: In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook the lasagna noodles according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Prepare the Meat Sauce: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef and Italian sausage. Cook until browned, about 5 minutes. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, cooking until the onion is translucent. Drain excess fat.

Add Tomato Mixture: Stir in the tomato sauce, tomato paste, diced tomatoes, sugar, basil, oregano, salt, and pepper. Let it simmer on low heat for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Mix Ricotta Filling: While the sauce simmers, in a mixing bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, and a pinch of salt. Mix well until creamy.

Layer the Lasagna: In a 9x13 inch baking dish, spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom. Place 3 lasagna noodles over the sauce. Spread ⅓ of the ricotta mixture over the noodles, followed by ⅓ of the mozzarella cheese and ⅓ of the meat sauce. Repeat the layers two more times, ending with the remaining sauce on top. Sprinkle with the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.

Cover and Bake: Cover the dish with aluminum foil, making sure it doesn’t touch the cheese. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 25 minutes, or until the top is bubbly and golden brown.

Rest and Serve: Let the lasagna rest for about 15 minutes before slicing. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired and serve hot.
