Brussels sprouts have a rich history that traces back to ancient Rome, where they were cultivated in the Mediterranean region. However, they gained significant popularity in Belgium, particularly around the city of Brussels, which is how they earned their name. The first recorded use of Brussels sprouts dates back to the 16th century, but it wasn't until the 18th century that they became a staple in European cuisine.

Ingredients

1 ½ lbs Brussels sprouts, trimmed and halved

6 oz bacon, diced

¼ cup honey

2 tablespoons olive oil

2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar

1 teaspoon garlic powder

½ teaspoon salt

¼ teaspoon black pepper

Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).

In a large bowl, combine the Brussels sprouts, diced bacon, olive oil, honey, balsamic vinegar, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Toss everything together until the Brussels sprouts and bacon are evenly coated.

Spread the mixture onto a large baking sheet in a single layer, ensuring the sprouts are flat side down for optimal caramelization.

Roast in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the Brussels sprouts are tender and caramelized, and the bacon is crispy. Make sure to stir halfway through for even cooking.

Once done, remove from the oven and let them cool for a couple of minutes.

Transfer to a serving dish and garnish with fresh parsley. Drizzle with any remaining honey glaze from the baking sheet for added flavor.

Serve warm as a delicious side dish or a gourmet appetizer!
