Bundt cakes have a fascinating history that dates back to the 1950s when they gained popularity in the United States, although their origins trace back to Europe. The term "Bundt" is derived from the German word "bundkuchen," which means "a cake for gathering." This rich cultural background adds a layer of warmth to the act of baking and sharing these cakes.

Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

½ teaspoon ground nutmeg

½ teaspoon salt

½ cup unsalted butter, softened

1 cup packed brown sugar

½ cup granulated sugar

3 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cup buttermilk

2 cups peeled and diced apples (about 2 medium-sized apples)

½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

½ cup maple syrup (for glaze)

1 cup powdered sugar (for glaze)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 10-inch Bundt pan to ensure easy release of the cake.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Set aside.

Cream Butter and Sugars: In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar using a hand mixer or a stand mixer on high speed until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.

Add Eggs and Vanilla: Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Then mix in the vanilla extract until combined.

Alternate Mixing Dry Ingredients and Buttermilk: Gradually mix in the dry ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk. Start and finish with the flour mixture (flour, buttermilk, flour). Mix only until just combined to avoid overmixing the batter.

Fold in Apples and Nuts: Gently fold in the diced apples and chopped nuts until evenly distributed throughout the batter.

Pour and Bake: Pour the batter into the prepared Bundt pan, smoothing the top with a spatula. Bake in the preheated oven for 50-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Cool the Cake: Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Then, run a knife around the edge to loosen it, and carefully invert the cake onto a wire rack to cool completely.

Prepare Maple Glaze: In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar and maple syrup until smooth. If the glaze is too thick, add a teaspoon of warm water at a time until you reach your desired consistency.

Glaze the Cake: Once the cake is completely cooled, drizzle the maple glaze over the top, allowing it to cascade down the sides for an elegant finish.

Serve: Slice and serve this delicious, moist Maple Glazed Apple Bundt Cake to friends and family, and enjoy the cozy flavors!
