Ingredients

4 large eggs

2 cups whole milk

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)

1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)

Extra nutmeg or cinnamon for garnish

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Mix Eggs: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs until they are well beaten and slightly frothy.

Combine Ingredients: Gradually add the milk, sugar, vanilla extract, and salt to the eggs. Mix well until thoroughly combined.

Add Spices: If using, sprinkle in the ground nutmeg and cinnamon, stirring gently to incorporate. This adds a lovely flavor to your custard.

Prepare Baking Dish: Grease a 1.5-quart baking dish or individual ramekins with a little butter.

Pour Mixture: Pour the custard mixture into the prepared dish or ramekins.

Create a Water Bath: Place the filled dish in a larger baking pan. Carefully fill the larger pan with hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the custard dish. This helps the custard cook evenly.

Bake: Place in the oven and bake for 45 to 55 minutes, or until the custard is set. You can check for doneness by inserting a knife into the center; it should come out clean.

Cool: Once done, carefully remove the custard from the water bath and let it cool for about 10 minutes at room temperature. It can also be chilled in the refrigerator for a few hours if you prefer it cold.

Garnish and Serve: Before serving, sprinkle a little extra nutmeg or cinnamon on top for presentation. Enjoy your delightful baked custard!
