Ingredients

1 loaf of brioche or challah bread, cut into 1-inch cubes

6 large eggs

2 cups whole milk

1 cup heavy cream

3/4 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (freshly grated is best)

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup blueberries (or your favorite fruit)

1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

Powdered sugar for dusting

Maple syrup for serving

Instructions

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.

In a greased 9x13-inch baking dish, evenly distribute the bread cubes. Sprinkle the blueberries and nuts over the top.

Pour the egg mixture over the bread, ensuring all pieces are well coated. Press the bread gently to help it soak up the liquid.

Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight (or for at least 4 hours) to allow the flavors to meld and the bread to absorb the custard.

The next morning, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the dish from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for 15-20 minutes.

Bake the casserole uncovered for 45-55 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set.

Let it cool for a few minutes before dusting with powdered sugar.

Serve warm with a drizzle of maple syrup and, if desired, additional fresh fruit.
