Ingredients

For the Base:

1 ½ cups all-purpose flour

½ cup powdered sugar

½ cup unsalted butter, softened

½ teaspoon salt

For the Salted Caramel:

1 cup granulated sugar

6 tablespoons unsalted butter

½ cup heavy cream

½ teaspoon sea salt (plus more for topping)

For the Topping:

1 cup dark chocolate chips (or milk chocolate, if preferred)

1 tablespoon unsalted butter

Instructions

Prepare the Base:

    - Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8x8 inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper, leaving some overhang for easy removal later.

      - In a medium bowl, mix together the flour, powdered sugar, and salt. Add the softened butter and blend until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

        - Press the mixture evenly into the bottom of the prepared baking pan. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until lightly golden. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly.

          Make the Salted Caramel:

            - In a medium saucepan over medium heat, add the granulated sugar. Stir continuously until the sugar begins to melt and turns a deep amber color. Be careful not to burn it.

              - Once melted, promptly stir in the butter until fully combined. The mix will bubble up significantly.

                - Slowly pour in the heavy cream while stirring until smooth. Remove from heat and stir in the ½ teaspoon sea salt. Let the caramel cool slightly before pouring it over the cooled base. Spread it evenly.

                  Prepare the Chocolate Topping:

                    - In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the dark chocolate chips and 1 tablespoon of butter. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until melted and smooth.

                      - Pour the melted chocolate over the salted caramel layer and spread evenly. Sprinkle a pinch of sea salt on top to contrast against the sweetness.

                        Chill and Serve:

                          - Refrigerate the bars for at least 2 hours or until the chocolate is set. Once set, lift the bars out of the pan using the parchment overhang, and cut them into squares or bars.

                            Enjoy:

                              - Serve these indulgent salted caramel butter bars at room temperature or chilled. They’re perfect for sharing!
