There’s something incredibly comforting about breakfast casseroles. They evoke memories of family gatherings and lazy Sunday mornings, where the aroma of a delicious meal fills the house, coaxing everyone out of bed. One of my fondest memories is from a chilly autumn morning when my grandmother surprised us all with her signature breakfast bake—an exquisite blend of flavors that made the day feel special. Inspired by that experience, I’ve crafted my own version: the Maple Bliss Breakfast Casserole. This delightful dish features savory sausage, creamy eggs, and a touch of sweetness from pure maple syrup, making it the perfect centerpiece for any brunch or a cozy family breakfast.

Ingredients

1 pound sweet Italian sausage, casings removed

6 large eggs

2 cups milk (whole or 2%)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon salt

8 cups cubed day-old French bread

1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

1/2 cup pure maple syrup (plus extra for drizzling)

1/2 cup chopped pecans (optional)

1 cup fresh blueberries (optional for garnish)

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with non-stick spray or butter.

Cook the sausage: In a large skillet over medium heat, crumble the sweet Italian sausage. Cook until browned and fully cooked, about 5-7 minutes. Drain any excess fat and set aside.

Whisk the egg mixture: In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.

Assemble the casserole: In the prepared baking dish, spread half of the cubed French bread evenly across the bottom. Layer half of the sausage on top, followed by half of the cheese. Pour half of the egg mixture over the layers. Repeat the layers with the remaining bread, sausage, cheese, and egg mixture.

Add the sweet element: Drizzle 1/2 cup of maple syrup over the top layer and sprinkle with chopped pecans if using. Press the mixture down gently to ensure all components are submerged in the egg mixture.

Bake the casserole: Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the casserole is set in the middle and the top is golden brown.

Cool and serve: Remove from the oven and let it cool for 5-10 minutes. Drizzle with extra maple syrup if desired and garnish with fresh blueberries.

Slice and enjoy: Cut into squares and serve warm. This casserole is perfect for brunch, family gatherings, or even make-ahead weekday breakfasts!
