Fudgy brownies are a distinct category within the broader brownie spectrum, celebrated for their dense and moist texture. The primary characteristics that define fudgy brownies include a rich, chocolatey flavor, a slightly gooey center, and a chewy exterior that gives way to bliss with every bite. Unlike cake-like brownies, which can be airy and spongy, fudgy brownies offer an indulgent density that chocolate lovers crave.

Ingredients

1 cup (225g) unsalted butter, melted

2 cups (400g) granulated sugar

4 large eggs

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 cup (130g) all-purpose flour

1 cup (90g) unsweetened cocoa powder

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 cup (175g) chocolate chips (semi-sweet or dark, your choice)

Optional: ½ cup (50g) chopped walnuts or pecans

Instructions

Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.

Mix Wet Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the melted butter and granulated sugar. Mix until well combined and smooth. Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.

Combine Dry Ingredients: In another bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, salt, and baking powder.

Combine Mixtures: Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet ingredients, stirring gently until just combined. Do not overmix – a few lumps are okay!

Add Chocolate Chips: Fold in the chocolate chips and, if using, the chopped nuts. The batter will be thick and fudgy.

Bake: Pour the brownie batter into the prepared baking pan, spreading it evenly. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes. A toothpick should come out with a few moist crumbs (not wet batter) for that fudgy texture!

Cool: Once baked, remove the brownies from the oven and let them cool in the pan for about 15 minutes. If you used parchment, lift them out carefully and allow them to cool completely on a wire rack before cutting into squares.

Serve: Cut into squares and enjoy warm or at room temperature. They pair beautifully with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!
